Could this ‘Mirror’ Replace All Your Workout Videos?

A new high-tech mirror has been designed to work as a kind of full-body fitness experience that could one day replace or highly supplement workout videos. It could certainly do a number on the way people think about their home gyms.

The new product is called Mirror, and it brings together a slim, sleek design with state or the art fitness tech. When not in use, this piece of technology looks just like a regular body-length mirror. It can be installed on a floor stand or mounted on a wall, whichever the user prefers. When it is turned off, it is a mirror that can be used in the typical way. Check your outfit before you head out, or make sure you don’t have lipstick on your teeth.

Why the Mirror Could Replace Many Workout Videos

Once the mirror is turned on, it is a complete interactive home gym experience. This device was created by Brynn Putnam, a former ballet dancer. Putnam is also the founder of the celebrated Refine Method fitness studios.

That said, the Mirror is quite the financial commitment. Even those of us with a massive library of workout videos likely wouldn’t have spent as much, in total, on workouts as we would on this one piece of technology. Moreover, that doesn’t include the monthly membership fee. The Mirror currently retails for $1,495 and has a monthly membership fee of $39, to boot. Overall, it is meant to function as a personal trainer, workout videos and all-in-one fitness tracker.

What’s in the Mirror?

The Mirror contains an LCD panel that, once turned on, turns the reflective surface into a great deal more. Suddenly, the user can choose from hundreds of different types of fitness class on-demand. A minimum of 50 new workouts are added to the library with each week. They include everything from boxing to Pilates, depending on what the user wants to accomplish that day.

The mirror becomes a screen that displays the class selected by the user. It also features a camera that tracks each of the user’s movements as well as overall performance. That way, the unit can offer you automated, real-time, personal feedback based on how you’re doing. The camera also features a cap that can be put into place whenever it’s not in use, to ensure total privacy.

Workout Videos and Fitness Tracking Combined

Mirror isn’t just a high tech library of workout videos. It can also sync with a range of other connected devices. A companion app makes it possible to enter fitness goals with a phone or tablet or can even sync with certain Bluetooth fitness trackers and smartwatches to use their heart rate monitor data.
